Ghana’s quest to return to the continental stage officially begins this Tuesday, May 19, 2026, as the draw for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers takes place in Cairo, Egypt.
After the heartbreak of missing the 2025 tournament in MoroccoâGhana’s first absence from the competition in two decadesâthe Black Stars are under immense pressure to secure their spot for the upcoming edition.
The draw will see 48 nations divided into 12 groups of four, with the top two teams from each group earning a ticket to the finals, with one team progressing from groups that have one of the three co-hosts.
For the Black Stars, the primary objective is redemption following a disastrous 2025 qualifying campaign where they failed to record a single victory.
This unprecedented slump led to a period of soul-searching and tactical rebuilding within the squad, as fans and officials alike demand a return to the elite tier of African football.
The 2027 tournament, dubbed the "Pamoja" AFCON, will be uniquely co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
While the hosts are guaranteed spots, the qualifying matches remain a vital gauge of strength for heavyweights like Ghana.
With the first round of matches scheduled to kick off in September 2026, the result of Tuesday's draw will determine the difficulty of the path ahead.
