Three of the six nations that led at halftime in the round of 32 have failed to secure a win so far, continuing a trend of dramatic turnarounds in the 2026 World Cup knockout stage.
Only the 1938 edition saw more turnarounds in the knockout stages, with five comebacks recorded across that tournament.
Senegal's 3-2 defeat to Belgium was the latest example of a halftime lead slipping away. The Lions of Teranga were 2-0 up at the break after goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr, only for the Red Devils to produce a stunning second-half turnaround.
DR Congo also let a halftime lead slip against England before falling to a 2-1 defeat, while Japan surrendered their advantage against Brazil.
With the knockout stage delivering drama at every turn, the question for the remaining round-of-32 matches is whether the trend will continue. Ghana face Colombia on Saturday.
The 2026 World Cup has already produced more comebacks than any tournament since 1938. Whether that record will be broken remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: no lead is safe in North America.
