Ghana defender Alexandra Tay says the Black Princesses are proud of their response after bouncing back from their opening defeat to Ecuador with a 3-1 win over Korea Republic at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
Ghana suffered a 3-0 defeat to Ecuador in their opening Group C game but produced a much-improved performance against Korea Republic on Wednesday.
Captain Sarah Nyarko opened the scoring before Ivy Osei Owusu doubled Ghana’s lead, while substitute Ruth Amponsah added a third. Korea Republic pulled one back late through Beom Yeju.
Tay praised the team’s mentality and togetherness after their disappointing opening result.
“I think our group is really proud of what we put out there today. Obviously the first game was not anything close to the level that we know we're capable of showing,” Tay said.
“Today, we came out with a mission in mind, really stuck together and played as a team. We're really happy with that and excited going into that third game.”
Ghana will now face France in their final group game as they look to secure qualification for the knockout stages for the first time in their history.
The Black Princesses will take confidence from their victory over Korea Republic as they prepare for the decisive encounter against the European side.
