Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz hits back at critics: â??Winning makes the styleâ??

Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz has hit back at critics of his approach to football, insisting that the only style that matters in the game is one that produces victories.

Queiroz has often been labelled a defensive-minded coach, a tag that has followed him throughout his managerial career. His approach was particularly evident during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the Black Stars often sat deep, absorbed pressure and looked to hurt opponents on the counter-attack.

The style attracted criticism, with some questioning the decision to bring the Portuguese coach back for a second spell in charge of the Black Stars.

Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku previously defended Queiroz, arguing that style had not brought Ghana major success, with the Black Stars having gone more than four decades without winning a major international trophy.

Speaking at his first press conference since his reappointment, Queiroz defended his philosophy and argued that coaches are ultimately judged by results rather than their preferred style of play.

“I want you to understand one thing; my style of football is the winning style. Tell me one coach in the world that lost his job because of his style. I only know of coaches that lose their jobs because they don’t win.

“The winning makes the style. That’s the law of the game.”

Queiroz's comments are likely to generate debate among Ghana supporters, but the immediate priority for the coach is to ensure the Black Stars make a strong start to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

Ghana will travel to Bouake to face Cote d’Ivoire on Thursday, September 24, before hosting The Gambia three days later.

The two matches will be important for the Black Stars as they seek to secure qualification for the 2027 AFCON after Ghana missed out on the previous edition in Morocco.
