James Abankwah scores in Udineseâ??s defeat to Inter Milan

Irish-Ghanaian defender James Abankwah scored his first Serie A goal, but Udinese suffered a 5-3 defeat against Inter Milan at San Siro.

The 22-year-old gave the visitors a dream start in the ninth minute, heading home Unai Gomez’s delivery to stun the home crowd.

Udinese quickly extended their advantage when Jurgen Ekkelenkamp made it 2-0 in the 16th minute, with Keinan Davis providing the assist. Inter responded before halftime, however, as Carlos Augusto pulled one back and Nicolò Barella equalised in the 35th minute.

The hosts completed their comeback shortly after the restart. Marcus Thuram put Inter ahead in the 57th minute, before Francesco Pio Esposito added a fourth ten minutes later. Ange-Yoan Bonny then scored in the 79th minute to give Inter a commanding 5-2 lead.

Udinese continued fighting until the final whistle, and Idrissa Gueye reduced the deficit in the 91st minute after receiving assistance from Vakoun Bayo. The late goal could not change the outcome.

Abankwah started in Udinese’s three-man defence and played a full role in a thrilling encounter despite the loss. Udinese will return to Serie A action against Cagliari on September 19.
