Dutch-Ghanaian forward Ernest Poku scored late as Beşiktaş launched their UEFA Europa League campaign with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Olympique Marseille in Istanbul.
Introduced from the bench, Poku completed a convincing home performance with the fourth goal in the 81st minute.
Beşiktaş took an early lead through İlhan Fakılı, who converted Junior Olaitan’s assist in the 15th minute. Marseille drew level when Keyliane Abdallah finished a move involving Himad Abdelli in the 29th minute, ensuring the sides went into halftime at 1-1.
The Turkish side regained control after the interval. Václav Černý restored the lead in the 56th minute after being set up by captain Orkun Kökçü, before Amir Murillo headed home Kökçü’s second assist three minutes later.
Poku replaced Černý in the 71st minute and made his impact ten minutes later. Olaitan, named Player of the Match, supplied the assist as Poku struck to seal the result.
The 4-1 success gives Beşiktaş a strong opening in Europe and further confidence before domestic action resumes. Beşiktaş will face Amed in the Trendyol Süper Lig on September 20.
