Ghana has all the conditions to win trophies, says Carlos Queiroz

Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz believes the Black Stars have all the necessary conditions to compete for major trophies, but says success will require investment beyond the senior national team.

Queiroz said Ghana must adopt a broader approach to football development, with attention given to player development, youth education, infrastructure, facilities, logistics and medical support.

“Ghana has all the conditions to win trophies. But you cannot put your resources in one basket, players or coach. You have to put resources in player development, youth education, facilities, infrastructure, logistics, medical capabilities. If you fail in those compartments, you cannot succeed,” Queiroz said.

The Portuguese coach also raised concerns about the lack of consistency in national team selections, saying frequent changes to the squad make it difficult to build a strong and settled team.

Queiroz revealed that he once had 12 players unavailable, a situation he believes has affected the team's ability to develop consistency.

“You can't change seven, eight, 10 players every time the national team plays and expect to succeed. We have to find a way to build the team around a core of players,” he said.

“Availability, commitment and accountability are key words for success.”

Queiroz has returned for a second spell in charge of the Black Stars and is now tasked with rebuilding the team and securing qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ghana missed the 2025 AFCON in Morocco and will begin their 2027 qualifying campaign against Cote d’Ivoire in Bouake on Thursday, September 24, before hosting The Gambia three days later.

The coach will be hoping to use the qualifiers to establish a more settled squad as Ghana seek to return to the continental showpiece.
