The Government of Ghana has issued a travel advisory to its nationals following escalating violence in parts of Mexico after the killing of notorious cartel leader Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as El Mencho.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, authorities in Accra said the advisory was necessitated by the unfolding security situation after an operation by Mexican security forces on February 22, 2026, which resulted in the death of the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
According to the statement, coordinated retaliatory attacks by cartel elements have erupted across several Mexican states, triggering widespread unrest marked by armed clashes, arson attacks on vehicles, road blockages and reported casualties. The violence has significantly disrupted daily life in affected areas.
The states identified as high-risk zones include Jalisco, Baja California, Colima, Guanajuato, Michoacán and Oaxaca.
The Government has therefore urged Ghanaian nationals travelling to or residing in any of these areas to exercise extreme caution in their movements and to refrain from non-essential travel until stability is restored.
For consular assistance, affected citizens have been advised to maintain close contact with the Embassy of Ghana in Washington, D.C., which holds concurrent accreditation to Mexico. The Embassy has provided a hotline — 1 (202) 709 0568 — for emergency support.
Beyond the advisory, the Government of Ghana conveyed its solidarity with the Government of the United Mexican States, expressing confidence in the capacity of Mexican authorities to restore order and ensure public safety.
The Ministry reiterated its commitment to the welfare of Ghanaian citizens abroad and pledged to continue monitoring developments closely.
