38-year-old carpenter, arrested for allegedly defiling his 11-year-old daughter, has reportedly died by suicide while in police custody at the Agyeikrom Police Station in Elmina.
The deceased, identified as Emmanuel Cudjoe, is said to have hanged himself in the cells on Sunday, the same day of his arrest.
According to a statement issued by the Central Regional Police Command, Cudjoe used a strip torn from the edge lining of a blanket he had been given to sleep with to carry out the act.
He was reportedly found hanging against the wall of the cell at about 1100 hours, approximately six hours after his arrest.
Officers from the Elmina District Police Command, together with the Regional Crime Scene Management team, who responded to the incident, observed no visible marks of violence on the body.
“The body was seen suspended from the ground using the torn edge lining of the blanket he slept on. The ligature was observed firmly fastened around the neck,” the statement said.
“The scene was processed by the Crime Scene Management team and the body was removed and sent to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by the medical officer on duty,” it added.
The remains have since been deposited at the hospital’s morgue for preservation and autopsy.
Police said the relatives of the deceased had been informed, adding that investigations into the incident were ongoing.
