National Chairman hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Awentami Afoko, has declared that the party’s path back to power in 2028 depends on restoring internal unity and rallying behind former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential ambition.
“I didn’t leave my retirement to come in for any reason other than power. Power is all we want, so that we can use power to develop our country according to the way we see it,” Mr. Afoko told party faithful during separate engagements in the Volta, Oti and Central Regions.
The former National Chairman said his decision to contest for the party’s top leadership position was not driven by personal ambition, but by a conviction that the NPP can rebuild, recapture power and ultimately secure a Bawumia presidency.
According to him, the party’s founding principles and political philosophy remains the surest blueprint for Ghana’s development, but warned that internal divisions must first be addressed if the NPP hopes to regain the confidence of the electorate.
Mr. Afoko cautioned that the party’s declining parliamentary fortunes should serve as a stark warning to members, particularly the older generation who have dedicated decades of service to building the NPP.
“If we sit back, especially you, the elders, if you sit back and fold your hands and watch it, the party that you have toiled for from your youth is on a downward trajectory,” he said.
He pointed to the NPP’s reduced representation in Parliament as evidence that urgent reforms are needed, noting that the party’s seats had fallen from 169 to 87.
“We are now at 87 from 169. We all must stand up and say this party must turn the corner and go up,” he advised.
The National Chairman hopeful maintained that unity remains the most critical ingredient for the party’s resurgence and called on members at all levels to set aside differences and work collectively towards rebuilding a stronger political organisation.
Central to his campaign is the “3Rs” agenda – Reunite, Rebuild and Recapture Power – which he describes as a practical roadmap for returning the NPP to government.
Mr. Afoko argued that the party cannot realistically win the 2028 general election while divided, stressing that the first priority must be to reunite all factions and reconcile with aggrieved members.
He said the next step would be rebuilding grassroots structures from the polling station level to the national hierarchy, empowering the party’s base and strengthening its electoral machinery.
According to him, once unity and strong organizational structures are restored, the NPP would be well-positioned to recapture power from the opposition and return to government.
Mr. Afoko expressed confidence that a united and revitalized NPP would not only reclaim political power, but also pave the way for Dr. Bawumia to become Ghana’s next President.
