MoFA Launches fund to boost agricultural education and skills development

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) has established the Ghana Agricultural Fund for Education and Transformation (GAFET) to provide sustainable financing for agricultural education and human capital development.

The national endowment fund was officially inaugurated by the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, at a ceremony in Accra attended by development partners, financial institutions, agribusiness leaders, traditional authorities, students and media representatives.

The government has set a GH¢10 million fundraising target for GAFET by the end of 2026, as part of efforts to create reliable and sustainable financing mechanisms for agricultural education, skills training and capacity building.

According to the ministry, the initiative is intended to strengthen Ghana’s agricultural workforce, equip young people with relevant skills and ultimately improve productivity across the agricultural sector.

So far, GH¢3.5 million has been mobilised, representing 35% of the 2026 target. The ministry is therefore seeking an additional GH¢6.5 million by December 2026 to meet the target.

Speaking at the launch, Mr. Opoku described the amount raised so far as a strong foundation for the Fund and expressed confidence that GAFET would attract further support from stakeholders.

“The initial GH¢3.5 million mobilised establishes a credible and solid base for the initiative,” he said.

The minister disclosed that the government intends to substantially expand the fund over the next two years, with an ambitious long-term target of GH¢100 million by 2028.

He said the expansion of GAFET would help provide the financial resources needed to develop the skills and expertise required to transform Ghana’s agricultural sector.
