THE Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly has provided various forms of support to 54 Persons with Disability (PWDs) to meet their socio-economic, medical and other personal needs, with the aim of making them self-reliant.
The support was presented at a ceremony held yesterday at La Bawaleshie in Accra.
In addition, the assembly presented start-up kits to 30 apprentices who graduated under the Graduate Apprentice Programme of the Business Advisory Centre (BAC), being implemented by the Ghana Enterprises Agency.
Items disbursed to the PWDs included polytanks, laptops, refrigerators, a popcorn machine, industrial sewing machines, cooking utensils, among others, while some beneficiaries received cash donations for their preferred economic ventures, as well as medical and educational purposes.
Under the BAC programme, the apprentices received start-up kits comprising 15 hair dryers and 15 sewing machines after successfully completing their training in hairdressing and sewing.
Addressing the gathering, the Municipal Chief Executive, Dr Michael Mensah, said the disbursement was a testament to the assembly’s dedication to creating opportunities and providing the necessary support to enable PWDs to thrive.
“So far, we have supported a total of 247 PWDs, comprising 155 males and 92 females,” he mentioned.
Dr Mensah urged the beneficiaries to put the items and funds to good use, while cautioning that officers of the assembly would monitor their utilisation in order to ensure prudence.
On her part, the Deputy Regional Manager of the Ghana Enterprises Agency, Madam Jemimah Arthur, said skills training combined with practical support such as start-up kits was a powerful tool for reducing unemployment and promoting local economic development.
