One hundred and eighteen newly qualified doctors and dentists were yesterday inducted into the Medical and Dental Council (MDC) after successful completion of their medical training and mandatory housemanship.
The inductees graduated from the medical schools of the University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the University of Cape Coast (UCC).
Addressing the induction ceremony in Accra, the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, in a speech read on his behalf, urged newly posted doctors who were yet to assume duty at their assigned stations to do so without delay.
He described the medical profession as a calling and a commitment to serve humanity by saving lives, stressing that doctors must be prepared to serve wherever their services were needed.
“Medical practice is not just a profession but a pledge to humanity. Your willingness to serve in every part of the country is a true reflection of the oath you have taken,” he stated.
Mr Akandoh emphasised that postings should not be viewed as punishment but as an opportunity to provide quality healthcare to communities where the need was greatest.
He explained that the postings formed part of government’s efforts to strengthen primary healthcare delivery across the country.
The minister urged inductees to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, compassion and humility, noting that the significant investment made in their training should be reflected in quality healthcare delivery.
“The welfare of your patients must always come first. Let your competence, integrity and commitment justify the confidence the nation has placed in you,” he underlined.
Mr Akandoh affirmed government’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery and ensuring that every Ghanaian had access to quality healthcare services.
He also commended the MDC for successfully completing the first phase of its specialist centre project and assured the council of government’s support for the commencement of the second phase.
The Chairman of the Medical and Dental Council, Professor Agyeman Badu Akosa, charged the newly inducted practitioners to uphold the dignity and autonomy of every patient, respect the sanctity of human life, maintain confidentiality and practice medicine conscientiously.
He also encouraged them to pursue continuous professional development throughout their careers.
The Registrar of the Council, Dr Divine N. Banyubala, urged the inductees to listen attentively to their patients and respond professionally to their concerns.
He further advised them to act promptly whenever they had reason to believe that a patient’s life, was at risk, stressing that patient safety must always remain their foremost priority.
