I know there is a lot of tension around ahead of November 5. Indeed, ahead of November 5, a lot of insults have been hurled at others or exchanged between families and friends.
We Africans have not been spared. If anything, our passions and resulting insults have been deeper. Like converts, as Paul showed, we have more passion than the natives.
Too often, with respect to campaigns, to borrow Achebe’s words, we are outsiders who weep louder than the bereaved. Both campaigns assert, with passion that this is the most important election in our lifetimes.
Of course, they said the same thing 4 years ago! And if we are alive, we shall hear the same thing in 4 years. Should we believe the man who told us he had a bigger crowd in Washington than MLK or the woman who assured us for 2 years that Biden was the brightest guy in the room?
Now, I wasn’t here to see George W– I mean George Washington elected but I have seen a few losses in my life. I have followed US elections closely since 1980. I watched Clinton and Bush 41 exchange insults and later saw them become best friends.
I watched the hanging chads of 2000 and remember how Democrats hated the Cheneys but today, the Cheneys, who used to be rock solid Republicans are for the Democrat. I remember the Clintons attending Trump’s wedding to Melania and later watching Trump supporters chant, “Lock her up!”.
Indeed, Trump, like Reagan, was once a Liberal. Now personally, I have witnessed a mother and daughter exchange words in anger about Trump. I have seen good friends exchange insults on a platform over Trump and Kamala and then stop talking.
Unfortunately, if either of these friends got sick tomorrow, neither Trump nor Kamala would know or care! Let’s thread carefully! I saw Ivory Coast beat Ghana 3-0 in Kumasi and didn’t eat my fufu that night! I have been abandoned or betrayed by people or had things go badly but always, there is tomorrow.
On Tuesday, if your candidate loses, remember that candidate will move on. If the candidate can move on, so can you! Even after all that happened in 2020, Trump is here to fight another day. Keep your relationships with family and friends.
Good luck on Tuesday and God bless America.
