Julie Essiam has resigned from her position as Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), effective immediately.
Essiam, who was appointed in March 2024 by former President Akufo-Addo, submitted her resignation letter to the president’s office on Monday, January 20, 2025.
In her letter, Essiam expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and highlighted the GRA’s achievements during her tenure, particularly in exceeding revenue collection targets. She noted a 4.8% increase over the 2024 fiscal year target and a tax-to-GDP ratio of 17%, exceeding the 16.1% goal.
Despite these successes, Essiam acknowledged the need for continued transformation within the GRA’s operating model to optimize revenue mobilization. She emphasized the importance of implementing IMF structural benchmarks, including the Integrated Tax Administration System and ongoing taxpayer data cleansing initiatives.
Essiam also expressed her appreciation to former President Akufo-Addo, former Vice President Bawumia, and former Finance Minister Mohamed Amin Adam for their support and trust during her time in office.
The GRA, plays a crucial role in ensuring tax compliance, generating government revenue, and facilitating trade. It comprises the Domestic Tax Revenue Division, the Customs Division, and the Support Services Division.
