Upper West Region maintained their perfect start to the 2026 MTN Elite U-19 Championship with a 2-1 victory over Volta Region, while defending champions Eastern Region revived their campaign by edging past Western Region.
Upper West now have six points from two Group A matches after following their opening 3-2 win against Eastern Region with another hard-fought success on Wednesday, 26 August.
Collins Yamba put Upper West ahead in the 32nd minute, giving them a deserved lead after a competitive opening period.
Volta Region responded after half-time when Apetor Paris equalised, briefly putting their opponents’ early momentum under pressure and raising the prospect of a comeback.
Upper West restored their advantage through Abdulai Bashit, whose decisive finish secured the points and kept his side at the top of Group A.
The goal was Bashit’s fourth of the tournament. He had scored a hat-trick in Upper West’s opening-match win over Eastern Region, the defending champions.
Upper West’s latest victory gives them a firm grip on the group as the campaign progresses, while Volta Region will look to recover in their remaining fixtures.
Eastern Region got their title defence back on track with a narrow 1-0 win over Western Region in their second Group A fixture at the GFA Technical Centre.
Ransford Siaw scored the only goal of the match in the eighth minute, securing Eastern Region’s first victory of the competition.
His early finish proved sufficient in a closely contested encounter, with Eastern Region protecting their narrow advantage for the rest of the game to claim three important points.
The result keeps the defending champions in contention in Group A after their opening-day defeat by Upper West Region.
Western Region, meanwhile, will now aim to regroup and improve their position in the group during their remaining matches.
The 2026 MTN Elite U-19 Championship continues to offer a competitive platform for some of Ghana’s most promising young footballers.
The tournament is designed to help players develop their technical and tactical abilities while gaining valuable experience in meaningful matches.
