Jonas Adjetey makes first start of the season as Wolfsburg survive DFB-Pokal scare

Ghana defender Jonas Adjetey was handed his first start of the 2026/27 season on Monday, featuring for Wolfsburg in their dramatic DFB-Pokal first-round clash against regional side VSG Altglienicke.

The 22-year-old centre-back lined up in a four-man defence alongside Kilian Fischer, Hauke Wahl, and Joakim Mæhle as Wolfsburg boss Tobias Strobl rang the changes for the cup tie. Adjetey played 77 minutes before being replaced by Bence Dardai.

It was a chaotic evening for the Bundesliga side. Wolfsburg found themselves trailing three times against the fourth-tier hosts, with Altglienicke scoring in the fifth minute to stun the visitors.

Adjetey was solid throughout, winning a free-kick in his own half in the 47th minute and helping organise a defence that had to weather constant pressure from the underdogs.

Wolfsburg showed character to fight back on each occasion, with Maximilian Arnold equalising twice and Hauke Wahl forcing penalties with a dramatic 117th-minute leveller. The visitors eventually prevailed 6-5 in a marathon shootout, with 18-year-old goalkeeper Jakub Zielinski saving two spot kicks.

For Adjetey, the start represents a positive step in his bid for regular minutes. The former FC Basel man made four Bundesliga appearances last season after joining in February 2026, and with Wolfsburg now in the second round of the DFB-Pokal, there will be further opportunities to impress.

The Ghana international will be hoping to build on this outing and force his way into Strobl's league plans before the international break.
