CAF President Patrice Motsepe has criticised what he described as “misinformation” surrounding preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations in Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.
Motsepe, speaking in Dar es Salaam on Thursday, acknowledged that the three co-hosts still have significant work to do but rejected suggestions that concerns over infrastructure could lead to the tournament being moved elsewhere.
“Many of you see these negative media reports, and I think some of them are misinformation,” Motsepe said.
He argued that some shortcomings had been exaggerated, creating what he described as a wrong perception about the overall state of preparations.
“The deficiencies are being exacerbated; the areas that require improvement are being exacerbated, and it creates a wrong perception.”
However, Motsepe stressed that CAF welcomes media scrutiny and wants journalists to highlight areas where the organisation and host nations need to improve.
“Criticise us and make sure that they make us aware of our failures and our deficiencies. It’s very important. We need that.”
He also urged the media to report progress being made by the host countries.
“What we would also request is where there’s good work that’s happening in Tanzania, say so.”
Motsepe maintained that there will be no alternative plan for Pamoja 2027, with CAF continuing to monitor preparations before a final assessment in January.
