Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman Paul Awentami Afoko is expected to file his completed nomination forms for the party’s National Chairmanship race on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.
Mr Afoko is expected at the NPP’s national headquarters in Accra to complete the formal filing process, having already declared his intention to contest the position and picked up his nomination forms.
The filing comes within the party’s extended nomination period. The NPP’s National Officers Elections Committee has extended the deadline for the submission of nomination forms from August 27 to August 29, 2026, following strong interest from aspirants seeking various national executive positions.
Mr Afoko announced his intention to contest the chairmanship in July and subsequently collected his nomination forms when the process opened on August 18.
His candidacy is centred on his “3R Agenda” — Reunite, Rebuild and Recapture — which he says will guide efforts to restore unity within the party, strengthen its structures and position it to reclaim political power in the 2028 general elections.
The former chairman has argued that the NPP must first resolve its internal divisions and rebuild confidence among its grassroots before embarking on a successful campaign to return to government.
His campaign has consequently focused heavily on reconciliation and party unity, with Mr Afoko engaging delegates and grassroots supporters in several regions since declaring his bid.
The engagements form part of efforts to build support ahead of the national elections and present his vision for rebuilding the party following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.
Mr Afoko’s bid, however, is not an uncontested one, as other aspirants are also seeking the chairmanship position.
The submission of his nomination forms on Tuesday will formally advance his campaign into the next stages of the NPP’s national officers election process.
According to the election timetable, aspirants will undergo vetting from August 31 to September 3, with the outcome expected on September 5.
Candidates who wish to challenge the vetting decisions will have an opportunity to appeal between September 6 and 7.
The national delegates’ election is scheduled for October 3, 2026, when delegates will choose the party’s next national officers.
Mr Afoko, who previously served as NPP National Chairman, is seeking a return to the position with a campaign focused on healing divisions within the party and rebuilding its organisational strength ahead of the 2028 elections.
His “3R Agenda” is therefore expected to remain central to his campaign as the party moves through the various stages of its national officers’ election.
