Dutch defender Jeremie Frimpong has disclosed that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) reached out to him in an effort to convince him to represent the Black Stars of Ghana.
The 22-year-old Bayer Leverkusen wing-back was among the players the GFA hoped to persuade to play for the four-time African champions.
However, Frimpong ultimately chose to represent the Netherlands over Ghana. Speaking in an interview with 3Sports, he admitted that he gave the GFA's proposal some thought but decided to align with the Dutch team due to their unwavering belief in his potential.
I considered playing for Ghana, and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) did make contact with me. But Holland was always the first to come, and they were the country that believed in me.
Frimpong, who has made 15 appearances for Bayer Leverkusen this season and scored two goals in the Bundesliga, has solidified his role as a key player for both club and country.
Frimpon donates to OSU Children's Home
During a recent one-week visit to Ghana, Frimpong made a heartwarming gesture by donating items worth over GH?30,000 to the Osu Children’s Home in Accra. The donation included Bayer Leverkusen jerseys for the home’s school team, among other essentials.
Speaking to the media, Frimpong expressed his joy at being able to give back to his roots.
I’ve always wanted to do this, but I needed to be in the right position to provide. Of course, I play football for my family, but now I can also help others. This is what I want to do, especially in Africa. This is where I’m from; I have Ghanaian blood. Putting a smile on the faces of these kids is what it’s all about.
Frimpong’s donation left a lasting impression on the children, who were visibly moved by his generosity. The smiles he brought to their faces are bound to inspire hope and anticipation for more support in the future.
