The International Women’s Forum (IWF) Ghana hosted a movie night and discussions in Accra to commemorate International Women’s Day (IWD). The event served as a “casual and informal” platform for women leaders to celebrate IWD and have friendly chats aiming at strengthening the sisterhood.

The famous human rights lawyer and gender advocate who was a one-time Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, graced the event. She shared a word of strength with the women, encouraging them to be each other’s keeper and remain resilient to shoulder through life’s challenges. Ms. Addo urged women to support one another through life’s challenges.
The Deputy Chief of Staff at the Office of the President underscored the critical role of community in supporting women reach their full potential, chronicling her personal experience to give the women hope that they can survive through any problem with a strong support system like the sisterhood they cherish.
Held at the Diamond in the City in Accra, the event gathered members of the forum – an organisation of preeminent women leaders – to watch the movie titled “When Women Speak” and discuss ways to empower women for the greater benefit of society, reflecting this year’s global theme for IWD, “Give to Gain”. This year’s theme emphasised the importance of mentorship and shared experience.
The event provided a platform for networking and personal storytelling aimed at fostering solidarity among professional women.

In her opening remarks, the President of the International Women’s Forum Ghana and Board Chair of the Business and Financial Times (B&FT), Dr. Edith Dankwa, explained the rationale behind what she described as a “casual and informal” night. “This is quite different from the usual IWD celebrations. We just decided to have a casual and informal meeting like this. We need to celebrate ourselves and our achievements and what we stand for,” Dr. Dankwa said.
She noted that the theme of this year’s IWD aligns perfectly with the core mission of the IWF. “There are three pillars of IWF: leadership, global networking and supporting each other. It’s for actually accomplished women who give back to society. And it syncs with this year’s theme of IWD; that is ‘give to gain,’ because we support women to give back our experiences over the years to future leaders,” Dr. Dankwa stated.
