Former Black Stars striker Asamoah Gyan has revealed that he never felt pressured when facing big teams, but always felt the weight of expectation when Ghana played lower-ranked opponents.
Gyan, widely regarded as one of Ghana’s greatest ever players, rose to prominence after starring at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
He later became Africa’s all-time top scorer at the tournament and holds the record as Ghana’s leading goalscorer.
In a recent interview with former England and Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, the ex-Sunderland, Al Ain, and Shanghai SIPG forward said that while there was always pressure representing his country, it was the matches against so-called minnows that brought the greatest stress.
"There was always pressure playing for Ghana," Gyan said. "Where I felt it most was playing against the minos, but no disrespect to them.
"Playing against teams that we were ahead of them stictstically so when we are going into such games, we feel they have nothing to lose, but we do have something to lose, and this is when I feel being under pressure, but playing against the top teams, I don't feel the pressure," he added.
Gyan officially retired from professional football in June 2023.
