Ghana U-20 striker Joseph Opoku was on target for Zulte Waregem, but his late goal was not enough as the visitors suffered a 4-3 defeat to Club Brugge in a pulsating Belgian Jupiler Pro League encounter on Saturday evening at the Jan Breydel Stadion.
Brugge made a fast start to the contest, taking the lead after just six minutes through Aleksandar Stankovic, who finished clinically to put the hosts ahead early.
Waregem, however, responded positively and drew level in the 38th minute when Marley Ake found the back of the net following a fine assist from Enrique Lofolomo.
The momentum swung further in Waregem’s favour shortly after, as Anosike Ementa struck two minutes later to hand the visitors a 2-1 advantage going into the halftime break.
Brugge emerged strongly in the second half and restored parity immediately after the restart, with Brandon Mechele scoring in the 46th minute.
Stankovic then completed his brace in the 60th minute to give Brugge the lead once again, before Nicolo Tresoldi made it 4-2 for the hosts in the 78th minute.
Waregem refused to give up and were rewarded late on when Joseph Opoku, introduced in the second half, pulled one back ten minutes from time to set up a nervy finish.
Despite the late surge, Waregem were unable to find an equaliser.
Opoku’s goal takes his tally to three goals and three assists in 19 league appearances this season, highlighting his growing importance in Belgium’s top flight.
