President of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has commended the performance of the Black Stars at the 2026 World Cup, saying the team performed beyond expectations.
The four-time African champions suffered an elimination in the Round of 32. Ghana opened their campaign with a 1-0 win over Panama before holding England to a 0-0 draw.
In the final Group C game, the Black Stars suffered a 2-1 loss against Croatia. However, against Colombia, the team suffered a painful 1-0 loss to the South American side.
Having played in the knockout phase for the first time since 2010, President Mahama acknowledged the progress made by the Black Stars, despite doubts over their chances before the tournament.
“The Black Stars performed admirably at the recent tournament despite many predictions that they would not progress beyond the group stage," he said.
"They exceeded expectations by advancing to the Round of 32, demonstrating determination, resilience and the quality that exists within the team," Mahama added.
Following their World Cup campaign, the Black Stars will now turn their attention to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Ghana has been drawn in Group C alongside Côte d'Ivoire, Somalia and The Gambia, with the qualifying series set to commence in September.
