Sarfo Duku praises Asante Kotoko board's tough stance after four players released

Former Asante Kotoko Communications Director Sarfo Duku has commended the club's current board for taking what he described as a courageous decision to terminate the contracts of four players, admitting the previous administration failed to make similar disciplinary calls.

The Porcupine Warriors recently parted ways with striker Kwame Poku, winger Elvis Kyei Baffour, left-back Francis Acquah and goalkeeper Benjamin Twum.

Although Asante Kotoko has not publicly stated the reasons behind the departures, Duku suggested that disciplinary concerns may have played a role in the club's decision.

Reflecting on his time at the club, Duku acknowledged that the former management faced comparable challenges but lacked the resolve to act.

"Let me admit that it wasn't the best. I strongly believe we should have taken some bold decisions to ensure the best level of discipline within the team, but at a point we were not bold enough to make those decisions, and it affected the club," he said.

He added that he was aware of the current administration's actions and believes they are steps that should have been taken earlier.

"I am aware of the bold decisions they have taken. It's something we should have done at a point in time, but because of the way we had been brought up, we couldn't," he said.

Duku also reflected on Kotoko's disappointing campaign, insisting that responsibility for the club's struggles should not rest solely on the players.

"We had a terrible season, although we started so well. You cannot talk about the playing body without talking about the technical handlers because I think their tactics might not have worked," he said.

"But to the extent that things didn't work, you cannot put the blame squarely on the players. Management also had a part to play. It means we also didn't recruit the best for the club, and we have to admit that."

Kotoko, now under the guidance of head coach Eric Tinkler, will begin their 2026/27 Ghana Premier League campaign with a home fixture against newly promoted Debibi United.
