As the New Patriotic Party gradually moves toward its January 2026 presidential primary, the internal contest for the flagbearer position is beginning to take clearer shape, with endorsements from influential party figures adding momentum to the race.
One such moment unfolded in the Savannah Region, where the Member of Parliament for Damongo, Samuel Abu Jinapor, publicly threw his weight behind former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
Ahead of a campaign engagement in the region, Samuel Jinapor described Dr Bawumia as the party’s strongest and most viable option as it looks ahead to the 2028 general elections.
In his remarks, the former Minister for Lands and Natural Resources framed his endorsement not merely as a personal preference, but as a strategic calculation for the party’s future.
According to him, Dr. Bawumia possesses the rare ability to consolidate the NPP’s core support, while simultaneously attracting undecided voters and energising the wider electorate.
He pointed to what he characterised as Dr Bawumia’s clean public record and national profile, arguing that years of visibility on the political stage, particularly during the 2024 elections, have already positioned the former Vice-President as a familiar and recognisable figure to voters across the country.
Samuel Abu Jinapor maintained that these attributes give Bawumia a competitive edge, should the party decide to present him once again as its presidential candidate.
In his view, a united front behind the former Vice-President would significantly enhance the NPP’s chances in the 2028 polls.
Beyond his personal conviction, Jinapor suggested that the mood within the party’s grassroots reflects a similar calculation.
He expressed confidence that delegates would rally behind Bawumia when the party goes to the polls on January 31, 2026 insisting that the overriding desire within the NPP is to elect a candidate capable of returning the party to power.
Dr. Bawumia, who led the Akufo-Addo administration’s digitalisation drive while in office, is seeking a renewed mandate from the party after previously leading it into the 2024 elections.
His campaign has steadily gathered pace, buoyed by public declarations of support from senior party figures such as Jinapor.
As the countdown to the primary continues, endorsements like this are increasingly shaping the narrative within the NPP one in which party unity, electoral strategy and the search for a winnable candidate dominate the conversation.
The party is expected to elect its flagbearer on January 31, 2026 setting the stage for the 2028 general elections.
