Justice Srem-Sai has reiterated the principle that all citizens must be treated equally before the law, stressing the need to strengthen the work of the Legal Aid Commission to ensure broader access to justice across the country.
Delivering brief remarks in the absence of the Board Chair, Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu Asiedu, Justice Srem-Sai outlined four key challenges confronting the Commission.
He identified inadequate funding as a major constraint, noting that the effective delivery of legal aid requires substantial and sustained financial support.
He also addressed the widespread perception that legal aid services are limited to criminal cases, clarifying that the Commission’s mandate equally covers civil matters.
Justice Srem-Sai charged the Board to move beyond a narrow focus on criminal cases and adopt a more proactive approach to delivering justice.
Another challenge highlighted was the shortage of lawyers, which limits the Commission’s ability to serve clients nationwide.
He urged efforts to expand the Commission’s reach to underserved parts of the country to ensure equitable access to legal services.
Justice Srem-Sai expressed confidence that under the leadership of Board Chair Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu Asiedu, the Commission can address these challenges and advance its mission of providing justice for all, regardless of social or economic status.
He also expressed confidence that the newly sworn-in boards will bring expertise, integrity and commitment to support justice delivery, promote good governance, and deepen public confidence in Ghana’s legal system.
