The Ahanta West Municipal Assembly has disbursed assorted equipment and start-up capital to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the municipality as part of efforts to promote economic empowerment and social inclusion.
The support package, presented under the leadership of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Ebenezer Aidoo, was carried out in collaboration with the Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr. Shaiku Damma, the Member of Parliament for Ahanta West, Hon. Mavis Kuukua Bissue, and the Department of Social Welfare.
Speaking on behalf of the MCE, the Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr. Mumuni Damma, described the intervention as a significant step towards equipping PWDs with the tools and resources needed to engage in sustainable income-generating activities.
According to him, the items and cash support would help beneficiaries establish or expand small-scale businesses such as food processing, tailoring, catering, and agro-processing, thereby reducing dependency and improving their standard of living.
“This initiative underscores the Assembly’s firm commitment to ensuring that Persons with Disabilities are not left behind in our development agenda, but are supported to live dignified, productive and independent lives,” Mr. Damma said.
He stressed that the intervention should not be viewed as an act of charity, but rather as an investment in the abilities and entrepreneurial potential of PWDs. He expressed confidence that the beneficiaries, if they use the items judiciously, would be able to generate steady income, support their families and contribute meaningfully to the local economy.
The Municipal Coordinating Director further reaffirmed the Assembly’s resolve to continue working with key stakeholders, including the Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations and civil society groups, to promote the welfare, rights and inclusion of PWDs in all aspects of municipal development.
The Municipal Director of Social Welfare, Madam Emma Nordzo, on her part, advised the beneficiaries to manage the items and financial support responsibly. She explained that equipment such as sewing machines, fufu pounding machines, grinding machines and chest freezers would enhance productivity, reduce physical strain and enable beneficiaries to operate their businesses more efficiently and competitively.
Madam Nordzo added that the start-up inputs, including ovens, flour, gas cylinders, sugar and cash support, would help beneficiaries enter or strengthen ventures in baking, food vending and food preservation, creating opportunities for long-term income generation.
Some of the beneficiaries who spoke on behalf of their colleagues expressed heartfelt gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama, the Ahanta West Municipal Assembly, the MCE and the Member of Parliament for the timely intervention. They pledged to put the items to good use to improve their livelihoods and become financially independent.
The items distributed included fufu pounding machines, industrial sewing machines, ovens, flour, gas cylinders, sugar, chest freezers, grinding machines, cash support and other essential equipment aimed at boosting small-scale economic activities among Persons with Disabilities in the municipality.
