Health expert, Alt. Dr. Daniel Owusu-Ansah has cautioned against the use of aphrodisiacs to prolong sexual activity, warning that such practices can lead to severe health complications, including death.
Speaking on the topic “Dealing with Hypertension Part 2” on Wompom Te Sen, a health show on Onua 95.1 FM, hosted by Ohemaa Acheampomaa, Dr. Owusu-Ansah emphasized that while there is no direct evidence linking aphrodisiacs to hypertension, prolonged sexual activity places undue strain on the heart.
“There is currently no research suggesting that aphrodisiacs directly cause hypertension. However, during sexual activity, especially when a person experiences prolonged erections or delays ejaculation, the heart works harder than usual. It’s akin to running a race for which the heart is not properly conditioned,” he explained.
Dr. Ansah further stated that this excessive strain can lead to complications in blood pressure regulation, increasing the risk of collapse or even death.
“After such prolonged activity, the body struggles to return blood pressure to normal levels. There are documented cases where people have died during sexual activity after using aphrodisiacs. This is because the penis retains a significant amount of blood during an erection, depriving other critical organs of sufficient circulation,” he said.
Dr. Owusu Ansah explained why the prolonged use of aphrodisiacs to extend sexual performance is dangerous.
“Using aphrodisiacs to prolong sex deprives some organs of necessary blood circulation, which can result in serious health consequences. God, in His wisdom, designed sexual activity to last only a few minutes, allowing blood to return to its original flow. If an erection lasts 30 minutes or more, it may deprive other organs, such as the heart or brain, of adequate blood supply.”
He warned that this could result in cardiac arrest, heart failure, or brain damage, particularly if a person collapses and sustains a head injury during such incidents.
“If the heart is deprived of blood, it can stop working or function improperly. This is why some individuals collapse during intercourse and never recover,” he concluded.
Dr. Owusu Ansah serves as an alternative health practitioner and Chief Executive Officer at the Healthy Soul Medical Centre in Kaneshie.
‘Wompom te sen’ with Ohemaa Acheampomaa airs on Onua 95.1 FM every Monday from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
