The Egyptian Football Association has lodged an official complaint against French referee François Letexier after succumbing to a controversial 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the round 16 of the 2026 World Cup.
The North African football powerhouse threw away their two-goal lead in the highly competitive clash on Tuesday evening, with Argentina staging a strong comeback to secure the crucial victory.
Dissatisfied with the performance of the officiating officials, the president of the Egyptian FA Hany Abo Rida has formally submitted their complaint to the world football governing body (FIFA)
The Egyptian FA is reportedly unhappy with several decisions made by Letexier and his assistants throughout the match, believing the officiating had a significant impact on the outcome of the contest.
As part of its complaint, the federation is demanding that Letexier and his assistants be suspended from officiating any further matches following the highly contentious encounter.
The 3-2 defeat was a bitter blow for Egypt, not only because they narrowly missed out on victory but also because the match was overshadowed by refereeing decisions that sparked anger among players, officials and supporters.
The controversial nature of the officiating has generated widespread debate, with many in Egypt questioning key decisions made during the match. The Egyptian Football Association believes the incidents warrant disciplinary action and has officially raised its concerns with the relevant authorities.
While football’s governing bodies are yet to respond publicly to the complaint, the case is expected to draw significant attention given the profile of the fixture and the seriousness of the allegations.
The complaint adds another chapter to the fallout from Egypt’s dramatic defeat, with the federation determined to seek accountability over what it considers unacceptable officiating in one of its most important matches.
