Memphis Depay defends touchline phone call as communication with Dutch medical team

Memphis Depay has moved to defend his conduct after a touchline incident during Corinthians’ clash with Flamengo, insisting his actions were guided by medical necessity rather than indiscipline, as scrutiny around the Dutch forward intensifies.

The 32-year-old, who had earlier left the pitch after 22 minutes with apparent discomfort, found himself at the centre of attention once again when he was seen making a prolonged phone call from the bench in the second half.

The moment quickly escalated into a talking point, with club officials intervening as questions were raised over his behaviour.

However, Depay has since offered a clear explanation, directly addressing the incident on social media and framing it as a decision made in consultation with medical professionals from his home country.

“Just to clarify my moment with the phone was pure to communicate with the medical staff in the Netherlands at that moment. I came outside to show support to my team while I could’ve stayed inside the dressing room with the injury. I’m Upset with the result of the game as well. We keep Working for better days. Tmj!,” he wrote.

The statement effectively places the focus on Depay’s version of events, suggesting that his actions were part of managing an injury situation rather than a breach of protocol.
