Black Stars goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has acknowledged the intense competition for places in Ghana's World Cup squad, admitting that the presence of multiple shot-stoppers in camp means he must work harder than ever to secure his spot.
Asare has been Ghana's first-choice goalkeeper under head coach Carlos Queiroz, but a costly error just two minutes into the recent friendly defeat to Mexico has raised questions about his position.
With Lawrence Ati Zigi, Solomon Agbasi, Joseph Anang, and Paul Reverson all pushing for selection, only three of the five goalkeepers are expected to make the final 26-man squad, which will be announced on June 1.
"I want to achieve great things for myself, but that does not mean I have achieved it as a number one for the national team. I have to work more because we have more goalkeepers," Asare said ahead of Ghana's final pre-World Cup friendly against Wales on June 2.
The Hearts of Oak shot-stopper stressed that the competition must foster unity rather than division.
"We need to maintain unity in the team so that we can reach our goal as a strong team. If the coach starts another goalkeeper, it doesn't mean that because I'm the number one, I should be angry. We have to stay prayerful and united for collective success."
Asare also touched on the adjustments required under Queiroz and a new goalkeepers' trainer.
"Every coach has their style and tactical play. What you were taught by your previous coach could be different, but as a player you need to follow the instructions and put in your best every time."
With Ghana opening their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17, Asare knows the next few days will be decisive. For him, the message is simple: work harder, stay united, and let performances do the talking.
