South Africa's national team players are set for a significant financial reward at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with each member of the Bafana Bafana squad expected to receive approximately USD 120,000 for participating in the tournament's group stage.
According to reports from South African publication Sunday World, the South African Football Association (SAFA) reached an agreement with the players' committee during a meeting held in Mexico ahead of the competition.
Under the arrangement, the 26-man squad and the technical team will share 30 percent of the FIFA prize money allocated to South Africa.
FIFA guarantees participating nations at least USD 9 million for reaching the group stage of the expanded 48-team tournament.
In addition to the appearance bonus, players will receive a daily allowance of around USD 100 throughout their stay at the World Cup.
The financial benefits extend beyond the national team setup, with South African clubs also set to profit through FIFA's Club Benefits Programme.
Clubs such as Kaizer Chiefs, Siwelele FC and Polokwane City are expected to earn approximately USD 145,000 for the group-stage period based on player representation.
South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates stand to be among the biggest beneficiaries.
Both clubs have eight players represented in the Bafana Bafana squad and are expected to receive around USD 1.2 million each from FIFA.
However, Sundowns will not receive the full compensation for all their representatives. Goalkeeper Ricardo Goss and winger Thapelo Maseko are currently out on loan, meaning the majority of the FIFA club compensation linked to those players will be paid to their respective loan clubs.
As a result, Sundowns will only receive benefits for players currently registered and active under their direct club roster during the tournament period.
The lucrative rewards underline the growing financial opportunities associated with World Cup participation, with both players and clubs set to enjoy substantial earnings from South Africa's return to football's biggest stage.
